College?; Dropouts?

Yo so what is everyone's stance on College (in the US)?

My professor last semester told us that a bachelor's degree is viewed as the same thing as a high school diploma now by potential employers and it just feels like the value of a degree is dwindling more and more as time goes on.

My friend's been watching this documentary about how college is set up to really just make money because it's a business, which makes considering some of the bull shit you gotta go through.

I mean what does everyone else think?
I'm not advocating dropping out because some fields really do require a college degree, but damn man.. the future aint looking too bright

And I recently came across this article a few weeks back by the New York Times:
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/10/23/opinion/sunday/will-dropouts-save-america.html?pagewanted=all

(mind you there are a bunch of other websites/magazines bashing this article and author and some of them have valid points)

interesting read.. what does everyone else here think?

I've been against going to school for a while, but I've been running out of options in life, so I'm about to hit up school starting in January.

It worries me, especially with as many horror stories as I have heard from people. But honestly, at least with a college degree you have a CHANCE of getting a good job, someone in my position now just has nothing. You can either hit up a factory or customer service.

College isnt a school, its a business risk and should be treated as such. So if youre going to college weigh the risks and the gains. College degrees dont guarantee shit they just kind of "help out"...You have to think, you want to do something you love, but something that pays too. Because love and happiness dont pay bills. Shoutouts to every person out there with a liberal arts degree working at a coffee shop.

in this economy, a healthy career is more likely in a STEM major, because thats where people are actually needed. Even lawyers arent getting the dough they should be getting.

But ultimately, these studies are biased because they include degrees that no one really cares about..like history, glass blowing, and shit like that. If youre willing to spend money to learn some shit you can do as hobby, then I think you deserve to suffer. No employer i've ever heard has said "damn, I really need an anthropologist"...niggas see shows like Bones and think "wow, that shit is cool and dont really learn the reality of the job.

More importantly, if you have a college degree and cant get a job thats your fault. Its who you know and how you present yourself that gets the job. I know software development engineers with no degree, so I'm sorry...i'm not buying it. Of course niggas with English degrees will suffer because who really cares about English?

It's unfortunate too because English is one of the most difficult majors to complete and in terms of general education and ability one of the most resourceful

So much to the point that English majors are the most desired people among our nations Law Schools

I'm proud of my English degree, especially as a black man who sat in a room full of stankin white hipsters and held his own while my counterparts were only doing Medical Coding and Billing and General Business (I promise man, every black person does not have to have the same goals in life...but I digress)

The only problem with higher learning is the expectation that you are guaranteed something out of it and the acceptance of the idea that you have to do it. Otherwise if you've weighed the costs do what's right for you. I don't think we need to take an anti-college stance due to the economy, we just need to come off our high horses when it comes to trades and 2 year certifications

Ha, I was gonna go to school for English. I ended up taking courses and doing a lot of workshops with writers.. It doesn't make sense to go to school to do what I want to. And its obvious that having a degree in english doesn't mean you'll be able to write a good book... look at Stephanie Meyer has a masters in english and is an atrocious writer.

STEM majors are science, technology, engineering, and math.

The thing with that SN, is that no one "needs" English and History teachers. There's an abundance of them, so its a supply and demand thing. Also, outside of a few states, teachers dont make that much dough...we talking lower middle-class (maybe higher). I might be mistaken on that though.

@Riot: Exactly. Dont pay for something you can do as a hobby and succeed. Pick something that can get you paid.

I just read that New York Times article and I think its stupid. The author makes it seem like everyone who drops out to start a business succeeds....he's trying to take the rarity and make it the norm. No, the percentage of making a successful business is really small.

Serious... Bout Errthang

All you really need to get ahead is to know what you're doing/talking about and to be attractive/appealing to someone. Unless it's from a top school the degree is just bonus.

I know a dude that became a full time teacher with just maybe a year of college, he did that for awhile then was on to something else. He was making a living just knowing the basics to teach young kids.

My girl has a friend that hooked up with professors now she gets to travel all over the world doing "research".

I’m always uncomfortable with the notion of a “career” in anything. American society is structured so that it opulently rewards certain roles (lawyers, doctors, celebrity actors and athletes, wheeler-dealer businessmen, con-man stockbrokers, big-talking producers) and ignores or financially penalizes others (teachers, nurses, mothers, caregivers, ministers, artists). That never changes, in good times or bad.

But they have to make a living.

I know that, but all I can deal with is the education side of it, and education is not about making a living, but making a life. A deep, spiritually meaningful life. It is a time for exploration and discovery. You’re right. Every day after my students graduate, the world will be demanding its pound of flesh from them. There will be pressures placed on them to compromise, to put their values aside and do things the established way, the way that makes money, the way that makes for worldly success. That’s why a university is such a special place. It is their one opportunity to do something for truth. Not for money. Not to get ahead. Not to curry favor with someone. Not to please anyone but themselves. It is a special time of life, a unique opportunity to go as far as they can, to dig as deep as they dare into the meaning of life. It is a time to study their hearts and souls and not worry about the ridiculous, wasteful, stupid things the world wants them to care about. To go to school to try to build a resumé, or to learn secrets about how to get rich or famous is to waste this glorious opportunity to break free from that oppressive system. The only right reason to go to school or to make art or to study art is to begin to understand truths the world suppresses and denies, and eventually to be able to share your understandings with others in acts of love and giving.
